This new immigration policy could result in significant and positive changes to thousands of deportation cases in the United States. However, it is important to note that it is not amnesty nor is it immigration reform. The policy also does not provide for legal status in this country. Therefore, individuals with questions about their immigration matter should contact an experienced immigration attorney to evaluate their case.

Miami Immigration Lawyer Antonio Revilla Appeared on Channel 41 to Discuss Cuban Deportation

June 30, 2011, by

Thumbnail image for Tony TV.pngMiami immigration lawyer Antonio Revilla appeared on Channel 41 on Tuesday to discuss the recent deportation of a small number of Cubans that have taken place. Mr. Revilla explained that Cuba is starting to accept some deportees that are not on the list of excludable Mariel Cubans. There was a 1984 agreement between the U.S. and Cuba that Cuba would accept just under 3,000 excludable Cubans that entered during the 1980 Mariel boatlift.

This means that deportable Cubans do run a minimal risk that they may be physically deported even if they entered the U.S. earlier or later than the Mariel boatlift. The list has not been made public, so there is no indication of who is on the list. Additionally, there is no known criterion as to who will be physically deported to Cuba. Deportable Cubans are no longer guaranteed that they will not be physically deported to Cuba.

Obviously, Cuba is not accepting deportees in the same numbers as other countries that the U.S. has diplomatic relations with; however, as relations with Cuba improve, it is anticipated that Cuba will begin to accept a larger number of Cuban deportees. At the present time there is a minimal chance that a deportable Cuban will be physically deported. Unfortunately, such people never know if Cuba will accept them if asked by the U.S.
